There were some bicycles and motorcycles on the boat, and it was overloaded with people and goods.

After one hour into the journey, when the boat reached near Katwa Ferry Ghat, some passengers moved to one side of the boat to get off at the riverbank, causing the boat to tilt because that side became overloaded. The boat then lost balance and suddenly capsized in the river. There was a strong current in the water.
