Fatal Train Collision in West Bengal: 9 Died

Siliguri, June 18: Nine people, including two Railway employees, died and about 50 others were injured when a goods train collided with the Kanchanjunga Express near Rangapani station in Darjeeling, West Bengal yesterday. The express, traveling from Agartala to Sealdah, had three coaches derailed. The rear coaches, containing parcels and a guard’s compartment, reduced the impact on passengers.
Prima facie, the cause of the accident is the goods train overshooting the signal and crashing into the Kanchanjunga Express. Local people rushed to the spot and started rescuing the trapped passengers. The accident occurred around 9 am, and rescue operations are complete. Injured individuals are receiving treatment at North Bengal Medical College. The Railway Ministry announced compensation of Rs 10 lakh for victims’ families, Rs 2.5 lakh for grievous injuries, and Rs 50,000 for minor injuries. Helpline numbers have been provided for information. Rescue efforts continue, and an accident relief train is on its way. A high level committee has been set up to find the cause of the accident.

Siliguri, June 18: Nine passengers died and 41 were injured when a goods train hit the Kanchenjunga Express near Siliguri, north Bengal. The crash happened at 8:55 am, 11km from New Jalpaiguri. Six of the deceased were in a general compartment. Others who died included the goods train loco pilot, the passenger train guard, and a Railway Mail Service official. The co-pilot is in hospital. The impact was less severe thanks to the guard’s compartment and parcel vans absorbing most of it. According to the preliminary report signal failure may have caused the accident. Rescue operations began promptly, with emergency teams working to free trapped passengers and provide medical aid. Compensation was increased to Rs 10 lakh for deaths, Rs 2.5 lakh for serious injuries, and Rs 50,000 for minor injuries. Railway minister promised an investigation.
